Seasonal Spring Ayurveda Guide

Officially Spring is a month away, YAY!

In Ayurveda, winter is when we should recharge and reset. This means most of us set these amazing goals for the new year and usually fall short of making them happen during January and February. This is because our bodies are not meant to achieve great things in the winter. Why in the world would be need to set out to achieve great things while the Earth is resting and recharging? Winter is made for slowing down and focusing our attention inward to prepare for our own rebirth in spring.

This means it is time for us to focus on those great new year goals we created and wake ourselves back up with nature now the spring is approaching!

When you start looking at your life and your routines in a seasonal Ayurvedic perspective, you will notice that not only are you balancing your doshas you are balancing yourself with the dynamic rhythm of nature.

When we look at Spring time, we notice how the weather is warmer, we have an increase in rain, and the world seems a little softer. This aligns well with our Kapha dosha, and we all know like increases like in Ayurveda. This could mean we might increase our Kapha and notice some changes in our health if we do not maintain a balance.

Signs Kapha is out of balance:

  • Sluggishness
  • Excessive Sleep
  • Weight Gain
  • Joint Stiffness

If you notice these signs during the end of winter and beginning or spring, you might have a Kapha imbalance. Lets talk about someways to help support our spring time change!

Supportive Spring Diet

Many of us experience a change in our appetite when the warmer weather hits. We tends to distance ourselves from those heavier, dense foods that we love in the winter. The warmer weather brings out attention to the fun and lightness of fruit, veggies, and endless salads. Let's break down the foods that we should focus our attention on during the spring time

Fruits

  • Apples
  • Blueberries
  • Lemons
  • Limes
  • Peaches
  • Raspberries
  • Strawberries

Veggies

  • Asparagus
  • Bell Peppers
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Green Beans
  • Garlic
  • Lettuce
  • Onions
  • Potatoes

Meats

  • Shrimp
  • White Fish
  • White Meat

These are just suggestions and not a full list of food, obviously make sure you find what works best for you and your body!

Exercise

When the spring sunshine hits, this is the time to start working on challenging yourself during your workouts. Try pushing yourself to do longer workouts and see how you feel or improve. When you are balancing yourself to the spring time, try to aim for your workouts to be between the hours of 6am-10am or 6pm-10pm. These are the ideal times for the season, but again these are just suggestions, do what feels best and works best for you.

If you plan to do yoga during this season you need to focus on clearing out your lungs and kidneys through your poses. This involves heart openers, forward bends, and back bends. We want to list our heart up and help clear out the lungs. When you practice your yoga, try holding poses linger than usual and give yourself a little challenge.

Some examples of poses to try out

  • Sun Salutations
  • Warrior one, two, and reverse
  • Cobra
  • Bow
  • Side Plank
