pose of the month
downward facing dog

Yay for February being my first month doing pose of the month!

So Down dog....most people who have practiced yoga know that down dog is a go to. So I am going to bring you some fun tips for down dog and if you subscribe to my newsletter you can receive the pdf copies for my pose of the month sequences for at home practice.

Tip #1 Keep your knees bent if you need to! Sometimes we have very tight hamstrings and it can be impossible to straighten your legs in this position. So bend them! It will be just fine!

Tip #2 If your heels don't touch the mat.... it is fine! We want to sink the heels towards the mat, but if they don't touch don't worry! I have days where my heels will not touch the mat. Do not judge your flexibility!

Tip #3 Send those hips to the sky! For more clarification reach the sit bones. towards the wall behind you where the wall meets the ceiling. The goal is to keep your back flat and keeping those hips to the sky.

Tip #4 If you are uncomfortable in this shape without assistance, use a wall. You can do down dog with props. If you use the wall, bring your hands shoulder distance apart on a wall, walk the feet back so your hips are at 90 degrees. OR if you have tight hamstrings you can rest your heels against the wall while in down dog, or you can use a towel or blanket under your heels if you do not have a wall open.

No matter where you are in your yoga journey you can practice down dog! If you are practicing this pose and get exhausted you can always let yourself sink into child's pose.

Subscribe to my newsletter and you can get pdf copies of sequences I make for each pose of the month!
